Hi there! My name is Lindsay and I am so happy that the world wide web has led you to my blog! I have so many memories from my childhood of drawing houses and constantly drawing, erasing, and moving around the fictional furniture in the houses I would create. I was incredibly fortunate to have parents who would encourage my artistic side and supported numerous room makeovers throughout my childhood (as a parent now, I look back with complete wonder at being allowed to do such things as dying a carpet purple or stenciling teal and pink flowers on a wall). While my career path has taken me in a different direction, I have always had a passion for interior design and a complete and utter obsession with textiles (which led me to a storage unit comprised almost completely of my large collection of throw pillows, but that is a whole other story). I have never stopped experimenting and have made a ton of mistakes when painting walls, choosing furniture and pairing fabrics, but over the last few years, I have really honed in on my own sense of style.
I am sure we can all agree that the most wonderful feeling at the end of each day is to come home to a warm and inviting space where you can curl up and relax with the people you love (and perhaps a glass of wine). While it can sometimes be tricky with children, pets, and that whole “real life” stuff, I believe that a home can be both stylish and livable, and I strive to achieve that balance in all of my design plans (and if I am really lucky, I can even accomplish it on a small budget)!
In the past few years, I have slowly been taking on larger projects, moving from simply rearranging furniture and changing out pillows and other accents (which can make a HUGE difference), to gradually larger scale renovations. Enter a handyman husband and the DIY world became my oyster! Recently, we renovated our condo to prepare it for listing in a saturated market and on top of having a blast working, we ended up selling in four days! Throughout the process, we often got comments from neighbours watching us working away that we should have a podcast to capture our ridiculous running commentary, and once we had finished, we were so pleased to receive positive feedback from family and friends, and most importantly, industry professionals. You can read all about the transformation here!
So that brings me to this blog! After a lengthy search, during which I positively exuded the patience of a Saint (cough, cough), we found and purchased our dream home. But nothing in life comes easy right? Like any smart house hunters, we had a list of requirements and this house checked all of the boxes. Except style. Good bones – the best bones. But no style. But hey, we had so much fun with the condo, it can’t be much harder to do a house more than twice the size right? You can read all about what drew us to this house and what we’ve got planned here.
Why Red House Style? Well, it’s a long story so I will give you the abbreviated version! There is an ancient legend that the gods tie an invisible red thread to the ankles of those that are destined to be in each other’s lives. Having adopted my son from South Korea, we have often referred to this legend and in fact, a children’s book based on it is a regular in our bedtime story rotation. The idea that this magical thread may stretch or tangle but that it will never break speaks strongly to my marriage as well. I met my husband in the summer after my first year of university. While we became friends, our lives were on different paths and it was twelve years later before we reconnected and fell in love. As sappy as it sounds, I really do believe that we are soul mates and those two boys – the big one and the little one – are the two loves of my life. When I decided to start this blog, I wanted to honor that (and as an added bonus, our house happens to also be red brick)! And truth be told, there is bound to be stories of life with my two boys intermixed with our design adventures so it makes sense for the story of our family to be a part of our name!
I am excited to get started on this next adventure and would love to have you join us!
